The Promised Land
January 20 - March 25, 2023Location: South Side Community Art Center
The migration experience of African Diaspora people has greatly shaped what we know as the Black experience in the United States today. From the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade to the Great Migration of 1916 - 1970, the movement of African Diaspora people has been documented furiously. In a photography exhibition focusing on the work of African American image makers and their decolonization of the lens, The Promised Land re-imagines stories of the big city life through Southern rooted influences, movement, and family portraiture. Eleven artists with familial ties to North and South of the Mason-Dixon Line respond to just how much Black life has always been in transit.
